The General Court of Massachusetts Bay granted Endicott 300 acres of land in Danvers on July 3, 1632. Along with planting many fruit trees, Endecott planted what is now the famous pear tree in the presence of his children and workers. He stated, "I hope the tree will love the soil of the old world, and no doubt, when we have gone, the tree will still be alive."

The tree has survived everything from harsh winters and hurricanes to earthquakes and suburban sprawl.
Although Mother Nature was a serious threat to the tree's health, the most serious threat was from humans. Vandals cut off the tree's branches and much of its trunk with hacksaw on July 27, 1964. When they finished, just six feet of the trunk remained. They stripped of the branches, leaves, and fruit; the tree was a sorry sight, but shoots appeared just several weeks later and the defiant tree grew again.

Sometimes called the "Governor's Tree," the Endicott Pear Tree was declared a national landmark in 2011. To this day, it is the oldest living cultivated fruit tree in North America. Being only a 13-minute walk from Endicott Grille, behind a large brick building down at the bottom of a hill is where the Endicott Tree stands today. If you park behind Mass General building (parking is free), you can walk to it along a garden path.
